The Tamil Nadu state government imposes a combination of VAT and a fixed component on petrol — approximately ₹11.52 per litre plus 13% VAT — while the Central Government levies an excise duty of around ₹19.90 per litre. As a result, nearly 24% of the petrol price in Tamil Nadu comes from state taxes alone.

While fuel prices have certainly been increased by the Centre, instead of placing the entire blame there, the Tamil Nadu government also has the authority to reduce state taxes and provide relief to the public.

As citizens, we should be willing to question and criticize any government when necessary, regardless of whom we supported or elected. Constructive criticism is essential for ensuring accountability and helping governments function more efficiently.
